What should I expect from my first shiatsu treatment?
The first shiatsu treatment starts with a consultation which includes your relevant medical history, the specific reasons that brought you to seek treatment at this time, and what you expect to gain from it. I will also ask about your lifestyle, diet, sleeping habits and other information which can assist me in bulding your diagnosis and a specific treatment plan, tailored for you. After this first stage, we will continue to the actual treatment, where all you have to do is relax, breathe and enjoy.

What should I wear for my Shiatsu treatment?
For a shiatsu massage, it is recommended to wear loose, comfortable clothing like sweatpants or yoga pants and a T-shirt, as the session is performed fully-clothed, without oils, and requires maximum mobility.

Does the treatment hurt?
No, neither a massage nor a Shiatsu treatment should hurt, but you may experience some temporary discomfort if your muscles are sore or tense in a specific area. It is important to communicate if the pressure is too intense, especially with deep tissue or Shiatsu, as discomfort should not be painful. Some muscle soreness, similar to that after a workout, is normal for 24-48 hours after a session.

What is the difference between Shiatsu and Swedish massage?
The main difference is that Shiatsu uses pressure on specific points and areas to balance the body's energy, while Swedish massage uses flowing, rhythmic strokes to relax muscles and improve circulation. Shiatsu is typically performed on a mat on the floor with the client fully clothed, whereas Swedish massage is done on a table with almond oil and requires the client to be undressed to his or her appropriate level of comfort.

How many Shiatsu sessions before I start feeling an improvement?
You may feel an improvement already after your first session, but most people report significant improvements for a specific health concern after two to three sessions. A course of four to eight sessions may be needed for maximum benefits, after which you can switch to a maintenance schedule of monthly or bi-monthly treatments. The number of sessions required is highly individual and depends on the specific issue being addressed.
